Wonkblog: Americans finally understand that marijuana is less harmful than alcohol


The important takeaway here is that one racially motivated campaign of disinformation took between 80 and 100 years to even start to undo.

And while this and advances in medical research around cannabis (and other previously forbidden drugs like psilocybin and LSD) are great news, there’s one more frontier we need to cross, and that’s the cultural stigma towards the recreational use of mind-altering substances. Our openness to accept that recreational use of these substances is OK will make a vast difference in how we approach drug use and drug addiction. Even alcohol suffers from a lack of self-awareness when it comes to how it fits into our social fabric, though alcohol is by far the substance people are most comfortable with using in a way they’d term “recreational”.
