The Atlantic: Turning policemen into soldiers

One does have to ask: as violent crime falls in this country, why are we giving the police more and more powerful weapons? The use of high-powered weapons in crime hasn’t exactly increased, and as gun rights advocates like to point out, the percentage of crimes committed with assault weapons and military-style weapons is incredibly tiny. So why give the police these weapons to use against the people who are, ostensibly, their clients?

Unsurprisingly, most of this crap gets used against innocent, unarmed people. Methinks there needs to be a little more scrutiny (and daresay tougher job requirements?) for our police officers.
